So I feel like my paper writing process is progressing quite nicely, actually. I have most of the literature that I need. My main problem now becomes synthesizing the information that I have gathered with what I know and think about Star Trek: The Next Generation and Star Trek: Voyager.
I have decided to focus my paper on the differences in the way that Captain Jean Luc Picard (Next Generation) and Captain Kathrine Janeway (Voyager) command authority over their crews.
As you could probably guess, there is not a lot of available literature on the critical analysis of Star Trek. What I have found focuses more on broader questions of gender--the use of female scientists and aliens to recreate traditional gender roles.
I feel like the majority of my paper is going to be me explaining my own ideas, and I just don't feel like I have the authority to do that (coincidentally enough). So I don't know how much license I should take in developing my ideas or if I should stick more to using the texts that are readily available.
